William Gorton

William “Bill” Baldwin Gorton, age 83, passed away Sept. 28, 2021, in Mariposa after a long illness.

Bill was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Nov. 23, 1937. Bill served in the United States Marine Corps in the late 1950s-60s. He lived in Southern California and in 1964 met and married Ernestine Gottschalk. He worked as a typographer and in 1966 their son Alan Gorton was born. The family moved to Catheys Valley in 1979 and worked for various contractors and later on delivered mail in Catheys Valley.

Very community minded, Bill was involved as deacon in the Little Church in the Hills, leader of Avian Science 4-H, raised hundreds of birds for White Wing ceremonies and was president of the Central California Pigeon Club for many years.

He lost his wife of 32 years in 1996 and married Nancy Brooks of North Fork in 1998. They met at the Bootjack Stompers ballroom dancing instruction group taught by Betty and Bud.

During the 23 years of marriage, the couple enjoyed dancing, singing (church and Fremont Singers) and traveling to Italy and throughout the U.S. Bill loved being “barn boy” for many years at the Mariposa County Fair where several rows of show pigeons had a spot in the poultry barn. Pigeons were judged by him and another fancier from CCPC.

A special ministry with his wife was volunteering at Merced Mercy Dignity Hospital as chaplain assistants. Those were happy retirement years.

Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Alan of Santa Rosa; daughter, Debbie and son-in-law Al Taylor of Woodinville, Wash.; and grandchildren Alexandra Taylor of Portland, Ore., and Andrew Taylor of Catheys Valley. He is also survived by his brothers Charles and Ken Gorton and sisters Sylvia Smith, Nancy Shirley and Susie Brooks as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service is planned for Friday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. in the pavilion at the Catheys Valley Cemetery on Hornitos Road. A potluck is planned afterwards at McCay Hall on Highway 140.
