A trip to the Bass Lake turned into tragedy for one family this Memorial Day weekend after a teenager apparently drowned.
At about 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, the Madera County Communications Center received a call requesting emergency assistance for a 17-year-old male who had gone under water at Bass Lake and not resurfaced, according to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).
MCSO said rescue personnel arrived on scene in the area of Falls Beach and located the victim, removing him from the water at 8:30 p.m.
Lifesaving measures were immediately performed on scene, a department spokesperson said, and the patient was transported by ground ambulance to an awaiting helicopter for transfer to a regional hospital for treatment, where he was declared deceased.
No further information was available and MCSO said they would not release the identification of the victim since he was a juvenile.
One day earlier, on May 27, the sheriff’s office Boat Patrol Unit was featured on social media to remind visitors at Bass Lake to recreate responsibly. They warned vessel drivers/operators found to be under the influence above the legal limit would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law as they enforced a zero tolerance policy over the holiday period.
