I left my apartment on foot long before sunrise. Long before the thousands of stars and big bright moon shining above gave way to blue skies. Long before a sane person would decide to go for a run.

As a teenager growing up in suburban Indianapolis, porch lights guided me from one intersection to the next on my late night jogs. Streetlights showed me the way around a loop in tiny downtown Jasper, Ind.

Here, in Mariposa County, not many lights shine at night.
