Richard William Rosebrock

Dick Rosebrock was born in Indianapolis and grew up on the family farm where they were “truck gardeners” — raising produce which was trucked into the farmers’ market in the city early each morning.

He graduated with honors from veterinary school at Purdue University in 1973 and then came west to practice veterinary medicine.

Dick and his wife Lynne moved to Mariposa in 1978, and in 1979 they opened Mariposa Veterinary Service, the first full service veterinary hospital in the county.

Dick served the community in many ways. He served for more than 30 years as the county veterinarian and as the fair veterinarian. At fair time he would spend all four days at the fair overseeing the well-being of the animals. One year he had to euthanize one of the horses in the rodeo which had broken its leg… he was so upset.

He served on the fair board and one term as president. He was a member of Rotary International of Mariposa. He was a member (and president) of the SPCA of Mariposa County. He was a member of the Mariposa Mountain Riders and the Mariposa Dog Training Club. He served as a Boy Scout merit badge adviser and a 4-H project leader. He sponsored the lead line class in the fair horse show. He served the very best tri-tip at community events from “Doc’s Kitchen.”

He was a member of the Mariposa Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For more than 25 years, he was Mariposa’s Santa Claus. He enjoyed having the children share their Christmas wishes with him at school parties, church parties, private homes and at Yosemite Bank where two generations of Mariposa kids sat on Santa’s lap.

Outside of the community, he was a member of the Irish Wolfhound Association of the West Coast and the Northern California Irish Wolfhound Club. He volunteered his veterinary services for Irish Wolfhound Rescue and at health clinics at the National and Regional Irish Wolfhound Specialties.

He loved his five children, Lynda Nedrow (Oklahoma), Nancy Mendola (Arizona), Eric Rosebrock (Washington), Tracy Rosebrock (Texas) and Robin Lynne Rosebrock McInerney (Mariposa), 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

His companionship, his kindness and the twinkle in his blue eyes will be missed, but his family is grateful his suffering is over and feel blessed to have shared more than 40 years with a wonderful husband and father.

He did not wish to have a funeral, but asked that if people wished to remember him, they could do so with donations to the Friends of the Fairgrounds (Mariposa) at www.mariposafof.com or to the Irish Wolfhound Foundation at www.iwfoundation.org.

Oh my, what a great friend he was!! So funny and entertaining, smart and caring. We rode together in endurance fitness rides, played trivial pursuit many Friday nights in a heavy competition of 6 of us, he traveled with Lynne and the rest of us dog crazy girls to dog shows, keeping us entertained with his fun and upbeat personality, hung out at the fair. He was a wonderful friend and supporter of my daughter, sponsoring her for her Maid of Mariposa win!! He was so caring as many of my wonderful dogs left us under his expert veterinary help and saved so many from miserable fox tails and other ailments. So many, many years of friendship with you and Lynne. You will be missed my dear friend. You were one of a kind.
