Allison ByerleyThis week, we celebrated another Independence Day. It is not exaggerating to say that we Americans value independence as highly or more than many other virtues. Benjamin Franklin famously wanted our national flag to bear the motto “Don’t Tread on Me” above a coiled snake. (I confess that I am glad the Stars and Stripes prevailed.)
What do we mean when we say we are independent? That we are self-sufficient and don’t need anyone else? That we can survive, even thrive, without help? ...
