Mary Jane Roberts was born May 9, 1922, in Lakeside, Neb., to Mabel Speer House and Glen House and died on Aug. 24, 2021.
At the age of 6, Mary Jane’s family moved from Nebraska to Iowa after her mother’s death. She and her brothers were raised by their grandparents. Mary Jane graduated from Farmington (Iowa) High School in 1941.
During World War II, she taught school in Iowa. In 1952 She and Roy moved to Downey, Calif. In 1960, they moved to Loveland, Colo. In 1963 they moved Midpines.
In 1977 Roy’s work took them briefly to Los Banos and Merced where Mary Jane worked for JCPenney. In 1983 they moved back to their beloved Midpines home. Mary Jane and Roy were active with the Midpines Boosters Club and Midpines Fire Department Auxiliary. She was also active in TOPS in Mariposa and Los Banos. In 2006 they moved to Merced.
Mary Jane was preceded in death in 2017 by Roy, her husband of 75 years; her parents; step-mother, Lucille; brothers, Keith, Raymond and Stanley; sisters Delores Counts and Loretta Sampson; son in-law, Tom Griffin; grandson, Marty Counts; and great grandson, Tyler Malcolm.
She is survived by her children, Larry of Grand Junction, Colo., Russ of Merced, Judy Griffin of Midpines and Jack ( Jacque) of Bailey, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Leah (Andrew) Russell, Stacey Counts, Carly (Bryan) Moats, Jessi (Mike) Murgatroy, Kate, Darrel (Kendra), and Drew; nine great grandchildren; and sister in-law, Mary Roberts.
Graveside services are Thursday, Sept. 23, at 11:30 a.m. at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Sana Nella, Calif.
