Mary Belle Mitchel

Mary Belle (Reed) Mitchel passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 11, 2018, in Mariposa at the age of 97.

Mary Belle was born April 18, 1920, in Chicota, Texas to Vera and Columbus Reed. She was the first of 14 in the Reed family. She took great pride in the fact she delivered her youngest brother, Don.

Mary Belle was a woman of prayer and had a strong faith in God. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church everywhere she lived. She loved to attend bible study and volunteer for the children’s camp committee.

She was a mother to five children: Barbara, Virgil, Yvetta, Martha Ann and Richard; and later welcomed to the family a sixth, Ellen.

At the time of her passing, she had 22 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, 20 great-great-grandchildren and dozens more “adopted” family.

Mary Belle moved around quite a bit and worked hard as a nurse. She especially enjoyed her time in Monument Valley, Utah, where she volunteered at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital.

She filled her later days keeping up with the growing family, crocheting, knitting and reading. She loved to make things for her family and friends. She would make washcloths for every doctor, nurse and aide she came in contact with.

Mary Belle was laid to rest alongside her husband, Clarence Mitchel, at the Dudley Cemetery in Greeley Hill on April 8, 2018.
