A Mariposa man died Tuesday in a head-on collision on Highway 49 South.
Kenneth Keuning, 82, of Mariposa, was pronounced dead on the scene following the incident, which took place at around 1:05 p.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Keuning was driving a 2014 Subaru Forrester south on Highway 49, just north of Woodland Drive.
At the same time, Harold Treadway, 64, Mariposa, was driving a 1999 Volvo three-axle refuse compactor truck northbound on the highway.
Each driver was entering a sweeping curve, according to the CHP.
For an unknown reason, Keuning allowed the Subaru to swerve to the left, crossing the double-yellow center line and colliding head-on with the truck.
The driver of the refuse truck was listed with moderate injuries and was transported to John C. Fremont Hospital in Mariposa.
There was a logo on the side of the truck which said “Recology,” which is a refuse hauler in Mariposa County.
The wreck happened north of Wass Road, which is located midway up the Woodland Grade.
Conditions at the time were clear. The CHP said alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
Responders from various agencies were dispatched to the scene. Highway 49 was closed for several hours, opening to one-way traffic control at one point and then being fully reopened at 4:30 p.m.
Traffic was rerouted around the incident via Darrah Road, Triangle Road and Tip Top Road.
