Margie Igou

Margie Mary Igou, nee Jelf, maiden name Dunn, was born in San Mateo, Calif., on May 16, 1932, and died in Fresno, Calif., on Aug. 19, 2017.

She worked for 35 years as a keypunch operator at Better Buy Wholesales and for several more years as a data transcriber at the Fresno IRS.

Her parents, Walter Elwyn Dunn and Margaret Francis Dunn, maiden name O’Brien, both deceased, moved with their three children to the Dunn Ranch on Hornitos Road, in Cathey’s Valley, Mariposa County, in 1936.

Margie learned her lifetime love of animals at that time, while struggling with chores and growing up through the Great Depression and World War II. She kept in touch with several friends from Mariposa High School until the end.

After the war, she followed her siblings to Santa Clara to attend college. She met her first and only husband, Cordell B. Jelf, Sr., while there. She had only one child, a son, Cordell B. Jelf, Jr., who still lives in Fresno.

After divorce, Margie learned to care for herself and her son and moved to Fresno in 1955 with the courage required in the absence of social support in the 1950s.

At Market Wholesale, she met a few, very supportive friends, with whom she remained friends until her death. While Margie believed in the value and need to work, she loved her home, purchased in her own name, in 1964.

She loved her many dogs and cats. Margie greatly enjoyed gardening. In retirement, she continued with her hobbies and very much liked relaxing.

Her health was good, as she entered her 80s. On May 16, 2017, she received a terminal diagnosis of cancer. She attempted chemotherapy to prolong life, but declined over the next few weeks. Hearing of the death of her son’s spouse, she continued her role to “mother,” as long as she was conscious.

She received Last Rites in her home on Aug. 16 and passed away quietly late Saturday Aug. 19, 2017. The three nieces of her sister were at her bedside. Her remains were cremated and scattered, as she requested.

There are so many friends, neighbors, family and medical people to thank for the love and support, especially her best friend Grace Avilez, Grace’s son Matthew Avilez, Margie’s nieces Janelle Hiam, Valerie Garnise and Melanie Mcnulty, and her loving sister, Dorothy Hiam.

The family requests time for quiet mourning. Remembrances may be made by being kind to animals.
