Leon Huffman

Leon Huffman passed away May 11, 2021, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born March 13, 1938, in Red Bluff, Calif., to Alton and Leota Huffman. They moved to Lodi, Atwater and settled in Fresno where he graduated from the Fresno Adventist Academy in 1956. Following his graduation, Leon completed an A.A. degree in electronics at Fresno City College.

In 1961 Leon joined the U.S. Army Security Agency and was stationed in Korea until he was honorably discharged. Upon his return to Fresno, he started his concrete statuary business under the name of Huffman Novelty. Later he moved to Merced and then to the foothills of Mariposa County where he continued his business part time. He also worked as a custodian and maintenance man at the Mariposa County High School for several years.

Leon was an active member of the Catheys Valley Historical Society until his health failed. He was also a member of Inky’s Basement Band and enjoyed playing his saxophone, while his son, Michael, played the drums. He loved his children and family very much. Summers brought fun activities such as trips to Disneyland, Adventist Camp meetings and trips to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

In addition, he supported his children’s activities in scouting. Beginning with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop # 94, he participated in all of their activities including chaperoning trips as far away as Cimarron, N.M. He also found time to help the Girl Scout troop in a variety of activities including their annual summer camp trip to Bass Lake.

Leon was preceded in death by his parent; sister, Lorene Daggs; and nephew, Norman Espinoza.

He is survived by his wife, Judie; children Christine (Michael) Lopez, Michael (Amanda) Huffman, Suzanne (Anthony) Crown; eight grandchildren; one great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is very grateful for John C. Fremont’s Hospice team’s gentle, compassionate and loving care!

A memorial service is planned for late June at the Catheys Valley Baptist Church, with a reception following. For more information contact Judie.
