Jay Rader

Jay Rader was born on Sept. 21, 1950 in Coshocton, Ohio, and passed Wednesday Jan. 27, 2021, in Mariposa at the age of 70.

His hometown of Coshocton is a small farming community nestled within the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Jay’s lifelong passion for sports began in high school when he discovered football. Jay moved all the way up to the rank as co-captain for his football team which earned him a football scholarship to Ashland College where he would graduate with a degree in business.

In the early 1980s, Jay decided to venture west and relocate to California where he would meet his soon-to-be bride Mary Ellen Monahan of 20 years. Jay would go on to spend the next 25 years working with Harold and Kris Casto at Casto Roofing in Mountain View, Calif., as well as running his own business, Raders of The Lost Art. This venture specialized in all forms of sales and trades of art pieces and collectibles.

For the last 10 years Jay enjoyed being a part of Casto Family Wines. He embraced the time he had living in the country and spending time with family. His favorite job was mowing the vineyard and he would often say, “I love living on this property and I want to spend my last days right here.” Jay succumbed a month after receiving the news of cancer. That last month he was happy to know his diagnosis and was grateful for every day, his family and all the well-wishers.

For all those who knew Jay, they could always recognize his voice especially when he cheered “go Buckeyes.” You could always count on Jay to keep you up to date on when the Ohio State football team would play, and of course what the expected outcome should be. Jay loved to regularly play in pool tournaments with his friends.

His passion, heart, sensitivity and overall energy when he walked into a room were unmatched. Our little farm will forever be a bit quieter without him, but he will live in our hearts forever. We will truly miss him.

Jay is survived by his sister, Kris Casto; brother, Jeff Rader; his four children; and four grandchildren.

The family will have a private gathering in February. If you would like to make a donation in his honor please donate to Mariposa County High School Grizzly Boosters Club with a check with Jay Rader in the memo to P.O. Box 127, Mariposa. He would be pleased.

I’m so sad to hear about Jay. We went to grade school together at Sacred Heart in Coshocton. Our little class was like a firmly.
I send my sympathies to his family.

Jay and I graduated from high school together in 1968. He was a great guy. He was all about football and I was into golf. I had the upper hand in golf, but his favorite club was his 5 iron and he would hit the most beautiful high 5 iron you would ever see. We lost touch and he just reached out in December on Facebook. Rest In Peace Jay.

Sorry to hear of Jay’s passing. He was fun to be around. I still work for CHS as a Driver Training instructor and often think of Jay when I pass by where he grew up while out driving with students. He will be missed.
