Most likely he was appointed by King Herod or the Roman government. His official title was Dayyaneh Gezeroth, which means “prohibition judge.”
The people of that day had a play on words and called these judges Dayyaneh Gezeloth, which means “robber judge.” The reason? These judges would sit in their tent like a king in his court surrounded by attendants. These attendants would take bribes to determine which cases would be heard.
