Gilbert Perry Erickson was born on Nov. 23, 1939 to Louie and Dorothy Erickson of Hornitos. He passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2020, at his home in Hickman, Calif., after a courageous battle against Parkinson’s Disease for many years.
Gilbert was raised in a ranching family and continued this way of life on his own ranch east of Hickman. Through the years, he farmed many row crops and eventually settled into raising hay for cows and horses.
Gilbert graduated with honors from Fresno State University with a degree in animal husbandry, taking his skills home with him to the family ranch. He was stationed in Germany while serving in the U.S. Army, was honorably discharged after his tour of duty and returned home to ranching. Later in life, Gilbert returned to California State University at Stanislaus for a degree and a secondary teaching credential in Spanish which he used to teach math and science to bilingual students for many years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; grandson, Christian Brown; son, Evan Erickson; granddaughter, Josephine Erickson; and daughter, Anna Erickson.
Nancy Louis and Severine Viargues looked to and loved Gilbert as a father. Gabriel and Jules Viargues, fondly called him Papi Gilbert. His sister, Ethelwynne Cane, and many nieces and nephews loved Gilbert dearly.
Gilbert was held in great respect and admiration by so many friends and family. His love of the land knew no bounds. He loved his life on his ranch and made it a welcoming home to any seeking a measure of its peace. He will be missed.
Gilbert’s family is deeply grateful to the staff of Community Hospice for their incredible support and caring. Remembrances can be sent to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA, 95356.
