Fall frenzy: Many events upcoming in OctoberFree Access

It’s got all kinds of things, from antiques to tools to vintage toys and so much more.

And it always draws a big crowd.

The 33rd annual Hornitos Patron’s Club Flea Market is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 6 in historic Hornitos. It begins at 7 a.m. at Hornitos Park and will conclude at 3:30 p.m.

Admission is free to attend.

“We sell spaces up until that morning,” said Mary Ann Visher, organizer. “They’re coming from San Jose, Sacramento, Bakersfield, all over. We get a lot of people from Fresno come up to spend the night.”

It’s not uncommon for there to be more than 150 vendors who came to the small town of Hornitos, and this year is expected to be just as large.

In addition to the vendors, whose tables are lined up stretching for what seems to be an eternity, there will be many food trucks stationed there as well. Indian tacos, sandwiches and much more is expected to be available.

“We’ve been written about in a flea market magazine that comes out every four months or so. We’ve been written up as the best small — we don’t think it’s small but they do — size flea market in California,” Visher said.

Call (209) 382-7062 to reserve a space to sell. More information can be obtained by emailing hornitospatronsclub@gmail.com or by visiting www.facebook.com/hornitospc.

The event is sponsored by the Hornitos Patrons Club, which uses the proceeds for various projects in Mariposa County.

Hit the trails for art

Mariposa County is a county that supports the arts.

The community will have the opportunity to continue supporting the arts at Sierra Art Trails 2019, the 17th annual year of the open studio tour.

It will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 4-6.

The way the event works is simple: those hoping to look at art can hop from location to location — located in studios, homes, galleries and businesses — around Mariposa and Madera counties.

“Sierra Arts Trails has become an institution,” said Jon Bock, organizer of the event. “It’s 17 years of work, creating basically the premiere art event in our region. So many people put effort into it. How could it not be good? All the artists, their families, the community, our sponsors and advertisers are behind it. That makes for a great event.”

The cost to attend the self-guided tour is $20 for two adults. The 2019 Sierra Art Trails Catalog, which also serves as the admission ticket to the studios, contains a profile of each artist, maps and other information about the area. Settings range from formal art galleries to home studios to private residences. Some locations host a single artist; others feature several in one spot.

The 2019 Sierra Art Trails catalog can also be purchased online at www.sierraarttrails.org, by calling (559) 658-8844 or by emailing info@sierraartrails.org. The catalog is also available at the Mariposa County Arts Council, Casto Oaks Winery, Ridgeline Gallery and the Mariposa Visitor Center.

A wide variety of art will be available to view and purchase, including painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, fiber art, woodcarving, ceramics, glass and more.

Sierra Art Trails was started in 2002 to take advantage of a large and active art community. Sierra Art Trails is based in Oakhurst, about 20 minutes south of Yosemite National Park. The region has a reputation for housing more artists per capita than anywhere else in the United States.

The annual tour attracts thousands of art lovers each year, some traveling from hundreds of miles away.

Contractor’s home and garden show returns

The 30th annual Mariposa Home and Garden Show will return Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds.

The event is free to attend and parking is also free.

“It’s got all the local contractors across the board. So it’s a good place for people to come and ask questions and get information about future projects they might be thinking about,” said Brooke Hanner, president of the MCCA.

Mike Kinslow with the Mariposa County Building Department will be there answering questions, Hanner said.

In addition, Tom Ritter from Creekside Nursery be available as well.

“It’s anything to do with homes and gardens. It’s pretty wide open,” said Hanner.

There are plenty of raffle opportunities planned, and prize drawings are held throughout the day.

“Every vendor is supposed to bring a raffle prize, and the grand prize will be a gas barbecue,” Hanner said.

There will be a free bounce house and fall craft center for children. Boy Scout Troop 94 will have breakfast and lunch items, while the Mariposa County High School Grizzly Band Boosters will have baked goods and drinks for sale.

In conjunction with the contractor’s show, the Friends of the Fair Flea Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., also at the fairgrounds. Like the Hornitos Flea Market, this flea market features all kinds of gems, just about anything one could hope to find. In previous years there have been clothing items, movies, CDs, vintage collectibles, fitness equipment, video games, toys, books and more.

Food vendors will also be on hand.

The UC Master Gardeners of Mariposa County will be in attendance. Bring garden questions, as the members are willing to research and answer them. According to the members, fall is the time to start planting perennials and natives, and they will be sharing information about plants that do well in the foothills and how to incorporate them into landscaping.
