Edythe Helen Comstock

Edythe Helen Comstock, 92, passed away Dec. 3 in Mariposa. She had been living on the Ewing Wing at John C. Fremont Hospital. Edythe died of complications due to the Alzheimer ’s Disease.

She was born a twin, Edythe Helen Ellstrom, May 11, 1917, in Grantsburg, Wisc. Her parents, Andrews and Alice Ellstrom, were Swedish immigrants. She grew up in rural Wisconsin on her family’s farm. She shared many fond memories of plowing the fields using workhorses, harvest time and those grim winters with deep snowdrifts. After graduating high school, Edythe attended nurse’s training at Grantsburg Hospital. She moved out west in 1939 with her sister and brother-in-law. She met and married Charles “Wilber” Comstock in Stockton in April, 1942. She had two sons, Kermit and Charles.

Edythe never missed a Sunday church service or Bible study, and her dishes were everyone’s favorite at church potlucks and family gatherings. Edythe was good-natured, always happy, and had her hair done, make up on, and took pride in her appearance. She worked retail until age 74, ending her career with Bruner’s Furniture in Stockton. She moved to Mariposa in 1996 to be near her loved ones. Edythe was a very dear, loving mother, grandmother and motherin law, who possessed a true care-giver’s heart.

Edythe was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Wilber” Comstock in 1976; and by nine siblings. Edythe is survived by her family, Kermit and Maureen Comstock of Mariposa; two grandchildren, Hunter Comstock of Fresno and Robin Comstock-Sadler of Chino; and her eldest son, Charles Comstock of Vallejo.

Arrangements are being made for a small memorial on the Ewing Wing for hospital staff and residents. There will be a graveside service for family and friends. The date is pending.
