Dorothy Terese (Rhatigan) Saunders, a longtime resident of Mariposa, passed away at the age of 88 on Jan. 15, 2019 in Oakhurst, Calif.
Dorothy was born on May 16, 1930 to Joseph Thomas Rhatigan and Margaret Mary McGrath in Brooklyn, N.Y. Dorothy is the number eight child of 12 children. She met and married George John Saunders on Sept. 1, 1951.
They moved to Long Island, N.Y., where they began their family with three of their daughters, Kathleen, Joan, and Judith. In 1959 they moved west to the Los Angeles area where they had their fourth daughter, Michele. After their retirement in 1979, George, Dottie and Michele moved to Mariposa.
Dorothy was a bookkeeper for many companies in New York and Los Angeles. She and George owned a house cleaning business in Mariposa. In the 1990s, she was the manager of Idlewheels Senior Home Park.
Dorothy was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Mariposa, where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. Dorothy took pride in knowing how to sew all her girls’ dresses throughout the years, including two wedding dresses, multiple choir dresses for Michele’s whole choir class and Barbie clothes.
Dorothy is survived by her four daughters: Kathleen Webb and her husband Grant (Bandon, Ore.) and their sons Timothy (Aurora, Ill.), and Kevin (Bandon); Joan Lee and her husband John (Florence, Ore.); Judith Thordarson and her husband Dan (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and their sons Trevor, his wife Mandi, their son Tyler (Saugus, Calif.), and Kyle, his wife Idelis, their son Silas and daughter Isla (Bend, Ore.); Michele Asbury and her husband Howard (Mariposa), son Christopher (Seattle, Wash.), daughter Elizabeth Gerszewski, her husband David, their daughter Chloe and son Jensen (Cambria, Calif.), son Stephen and daughter Maria (Mariposa) and son, Thomas (Oakhurst, Calif.).
She is also survived by her youngest sister, Eileen C. Scarpello (Williston, Vt.) and many nieces and nephews (all over the U.S.).
Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Thomas Rhatigan; mother, Margaret Mary (McGrath) Rhatigan; brothers, Robert Henry, Joseph Thomas Jr., Brendan Xavier, Thomas Paul, Clarence Gerard and Sean Francis ( John); and sisters, Catherine, Ruth G. Robinson, Sister Mary Michael and Grace Josephine Hayes. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Saunders.
Funeral services for Dorothy will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Jan. 29, 2019 beginning with the Rosary at 3 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 4 p.m.
