A Mariposa County man has been arrested and charged with child molestation.
John Leonard Appling, 45, was arrested on July 6. According to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office booking report, Appling was arrested at 10 p.m. at Highway 49 South and Harris Road. That location is near the Mariposa County-Madera County line.
Appling was charged under California Penal Code 288(A), which is defined as lewd and lascivious acts on a minor under the age of 14.
He was also charged under California Penal Code 288(C)(1), which is lewd and lascivious acts on a minor ages 14 or 15.
According to the sheriff’s office, the reported assaults allegedly occurred in both Madera and Mariposa counties. The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office is the investigating agency, according to Sheriff Doug Binnewies.
Appling was booked into the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility for the charges with bail set at $100,000. Appling remains in custody and is awaiting arraignment as of press time on Tuesday.
The booking report listed Appling’s occupation as a cook.
