This weekend’s Summer Fun Street Fair will be “as green as possible.”
Organizers of the fair, set for Aug. 10 from 4-9 p.m. in downtown Mariposa, are making a concerted effort to keep the event environmentally friendly. The fair is a fundraiser for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Mariposa County, which seeks to help children involved in the court system.
At the fair — which is free to the public — there will be local vendors selling their wares, live music, food and more.
But one of the most important parts of the event, for CASA, is keeping it “green.”
“We are going to be able to make this event as green as possible,” said Izzi Stalder, event organizer. “This year we want to extend our care for our community even further, by reducing the amount of trash we produce.”
Food vendors are going to try to not have plastic or Styrofoam plates or utensils. Pathos Screen Printing will be selling reusable bags, or attendees can bring their own bags to be printed on site.
In addition, CASA received confirmation that USA Pure Water is going to drive a four-spigot water bar from Novato for the event.
“They heard about Mariposa and they want to help. This will eliminate us giving out over 400 plastic water bottles, which would go into our local landfill,” Stalder said.
More information about USA Pure Water can be found at www.uspw.net/green-your-festival. html.
“We are hoping that our event starts a trend in the community of keeping Mariposa County green. It’s the home of Yosemite,” Stalder said. “As the home of Yosemite, we feel that it is our responsibility to help keep Mariposa beautiful and clean for all to enjoy. … Small changes such as these have an overwhelmingly positive impact on the places we live. By reducing the use of plastic or non-recyclable containers and packaging, we minimize the waste that takes up space in our neighborhoods.”
One of the highlights of the event, outside of “going green,” is a special giveaway.
Every $5 spent by customers at merchant booths will earn a ticket to enter a drawing. The prizes in the drawing include 20 Disneyland tickets (five families will win a four-pack of tickets to Disneyland), a Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino package, a Pier 39 package and more.

“At CASA of Mariposa County, we want to continue to be a part of the positive changes in our community,” Stalder added. “We believe that together we can make a difference for a healthier and cleaner Mariposa. We are excited for this year’s Summer Fun Street Fair.”
