Breast cancer awareness in spotlight this monthFree Access

Those living in Mariposa who aren’t aware October is Breast Cancer Awareness month will definitely know it after three upcoming events are held by John C. Fremont Hospital.

“It’s going to be a busy month for us, but a fun and exciting month,” said JCF Chief Executive Officer Matthew Matthiessen. “October is a big month for us.”

The first event, Paint the Town Pink, is being held from now until Oct. 12.

Hospital officials are asking businesses in the area to participate in a storefront decorating contest. The winning entry will be based on how creative, educational and pink the storefront is.

Judging will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. First place will receive a featured article and photo in the Gazette.

Those who take part are invited to leave their displays up through the end of the month or for as long as they like.

The second activity is the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation Think Pink Mariposa Walk/Run, slated for Saturday, Oct. 12.

“If you know any breast cancer survivors, encourage them to participate,” said Matthiessen.

Check-in will be held from 7-8 a.m. with the event festivities kicking off at 8:30 a.m.

Walkers, runners and community members will come together to honor cancer survivors and raise awareness about reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Those interested can register at The cost is $40 for adults and $10 for children, and those who sign up online will receive a free T-shirt. Participants can register the day of the race, but won’t receive a shirt.

The race will begin and end at the hospital, located at 5189 Hospital Road in Mariposa.

The final event is Mammos MockTails and ManiCURES, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the hospital.

This free event is a breast health education and screening event aimed at those who haven’t received a mammogram recently, possibly because they are uninsured or under-insured.

Participants must not have had a mammogram in the last year, and must be 40 or older. Pre-registration is required.

The hospital recently installed its new mammography machine, a state-of-the-art 3D machine.
