Allen R. Loyd

Long-time Mariposa resident Allen R. “Shorty” Loyd died at his home on Sunday, Nov. 13. The cause was cancer. He follows in death his first wife, Charlene, to whom he was married for 49 years, as well as his daughter, Mary Jane; brother, Joe; and countless other family and friends.

He is survived by Geneva, his wife of 15 years; son, Allen III; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

He was 95, born in Orson, Iowa, in 1916. He and Charlene came to Southern California in 1940 and then moved to Mariposa in 1977 upon his retirement.

He and Geneva married in 1996 after meeting on a gambling bus to Reno. They had a wonderful time traveling around this country in their motorhome. He could go most anywhere in the western United States and not need a map.

Shorty was a people person and met no strangers. He would arrive home from trips with new names and invitations from new friends to visit the next time he came through. They would also have his information. The door was always open at his house. He always was planning another trip.

When asked how he reached such an old age, he would say “vegetables and beer.” Life’s trial did not keep him down very long. He was truly a tough old guy with a big, generous heart. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

There will be a celebration of Allen’s life on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. It will be held at the Miner’s Inn Restaurant. There will be a time of sharing memories, so those planning to attend are asked to come prepared with some good Shorty stories.
