As a child, I recall most of the roads in Mariposa County were dirt. Dad sold feather dusters with wooden handles at the drug store, and one of mother’s chores was to dust daily. Every morning one of my early duties was to sweep the sidewalk and gutter in front of the store before school. In the summer it was worse with people throwing away all kinds of wrappers in the gutter.
