Aspen Fire smoke "may persist through summer"

(9 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 8) Firefighters were closing in on 100 percent containment of the Aspen Fire this week, but said smoke from the blaze "may persist through the remainder of the summer periodically."

The total acreage burned stood at close to 22,000 acres on Thursday. The total has grown little over the last week.

With containment imminent, the Forest Service has reopened two nearby campgrounds, Badger Flats and Midge. Trails in the Kaiser Wilderness remain closed. Rancheria Campground remains closed to house firefighters.

Lightning ignited the blaze on Tuesday, July 23. At least three minor firefighter injuries have been reported. The estimated cost of fighting the fire stood at $26.5 million on Thursday.
