Josephine Van den broeke

Josephine Theodora Van den broeke passed away peacefully in hospice care on Oct. 25, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

She was born in Belgium on March 26, 1925 to Desiree and Henrietta Van Bouwel. Josephine came to America in 1948 after the marriage to John A. Van den broeke, where they raised a family in Montclair, Calif.

Widowed in 1973, she moved to Mariposa in 1979. She left there in 2010 to live out her time in her daughter’s care in Las Vegas.

She will be remembered for her faith, good sense of humor and always caring for others, especially the children. She was known throughout town as the “needle and thread lady.” She continued to knit scarves and hats for friends and family until her final days.

She is survived by her sister, Louisa Van Bouwel; four children, Linda Groshong, Vivian Usseglio, David Van den broeke and Heidi Van den broeke; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

She has requested no funeral and will be laid to rest with her husband at Bellevue Memorial Park in Ontario, Calif. It is her wishes in lieu of flowers that memorial donations in her name be made to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
