Betty Boykin

Betty Farrier Boykin died May 18, 2017 at age 95 from complications of a stroke.

She had been a resident of Mariposa County over 60 years, part time while employed as a public health nurse and school nurse in the Bay Area, and full time when she retired.

She and her husband Jack ( John House Boykin) had rural property off Sharp Lane where she spent many happy years pursuing her love of the outdoors and studying nature, as they progressed from Airstream to cabin to house.

Her family has many happy memories of visits and adventures there. She also immersed herself in many activities involving environmental causes and the Democratic Party. She and friends were involved in forming the environment and land use group MERG (Mariposans for the Environment and Responsible Government for Mariposa County and Yosemite National Park). She was a dedicated MERG secretary for 25 years.

Betty and Jack enjoyed RV travel in the West which she so loved. After Jack’s death in 1986, she continued to enjoy travel with ‘Loners on Wheels’ and later with Elder hostel programs. Her first European tour found her in Italy on Sept. 11, 2001 where she was very impressed with the kindness of the residents when they discovered she was American.

About six years ago she relocated to Idle Wheels Senior Mobile Home Park in Mariposa where she enjoyed making new friends. Betty was very grateful for the help she received there from John Walters and Marlene Wilson.

Her family wants to express its gratitude to Linda Contreras of Johnnies Place in Coarsegold and to Optimal Hospice Care who gave Betty such great care and kind attention in her final weeks.

Betty is survived by her step-daughter, Virginia Boykin Frei of Oak Grove, Ore.; two granddaughters: Judith Spear (David) of Oak Grove and Kathryn Frei of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.; and her beloved cat Marigold.

Per her instructions, her ashes will be scattered at a later date. No services are planned.
