James Johnson

James Heath Johnson, 85, passed away on March 24, 2017.

Jim was born on Sept. 9, 1932 in Palo Alto, Calif., to James Howard Johnson and Lorrayne Gladys (Heath) Johnson.

He joined the Air Force at 17 years old and flew in combat missions in the Korean War as a radio man.

After his time in the military, he began working as a drywall taper and finisher. He lived in North Hollywood, Calif. for many years before returning to the San Francisco Bay area. In the mid 90s he decided he wanted a slower, quieter place to live and found that in Mariposa.

He lived here for 20 years. He volunteered with the Senior Center and the Golden Agers in Mariposa. He then drove the VA van taking veterans to doctor appointments at the VA in Fresno.

Jim was a very intelligent and witty guy who was also opinionated and cantankerous at times! He deeply loved his family, particularly his daughter and her family.

Jim is survived by his three sisters, Barbara Harpell, Jill Millette, and Penny Diaz; his daughter, Amy Sidebottom (husband Tom); and two grandchildren, Tommy and Grace.

A memorial service was held Saturday April 29, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Mariposa Cemetery under the shelter followed by a reception at the VFW hall.
