Grant Holcomb

Grant Howard Holcomb passed away January 14, 2017 at his home in Cathey’s Valley, Calif.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend.

Grant is survived by his wife, Vicki Holcomb; mother, Lois Holcomb; brother, Mark Holcomb; son, Jesse Holcomb; daughter, Ashley Holcomb Sherman; and grandchildren, Wyatt Holcomb and Charlotte Sherman.

Grant was born in Napa, Calif., on May 2, 1955 to Charles Phillip Holcomb and Lois Hufford Holcomb.

He spent the majority of his childhood in Orinda, Calif. The family moved to Aptos, Calif., in 1970 where he attended Aptos High School and Cabrillo College.

He was the first employee and worked for many years as a carpenter for the family construction and development business, The Holcomb Corporation. Grant helped build many construction projects in Santa Cruz County including Seascape Village Shopping Center and Seascape Beach Resort.

Upon completion of the Seascape Beach Resort Project in 1998, he moved to his ranch in Cathey’s Valley where he raised cattle. His maternal grandfather, Bruce Hufford, was a state forest ranger and rancher in Mariposa County for many years.

Grant met Vicki Lynn Key in 2000 and they were married in 2004. Together they built a cabin in Alaska where they loved to travel in the summertime.

Grant was an avid outdoorsman who loved boating, fishing, motocross, hiking, downhill skiing and will forever be missed by his family and friends.

A celebration of life will be planned for Cathey’s Valley later this spring. His ashes will be interred in the family plot in Santa Cruz and an informal scattering will take place this summer near his beloved home in Alaska along with a scattering at Holcomb Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness among his grandfather and fathers.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you remember him fondly for his kind and vibrant spirit, tell a campfire story or joke in his honor and have a cold one for him!
