Robert Bondshu

Robert Eugene “Bob” Bondshu of Mariposa, Calif., passed away on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. Bob was 87 years old.

He was born on May 28, 1929 to Harold Bondshu and Anita McGregor. Bob graduated from Mariposa High School and the College of the Pacific.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was attached to the 559th Strategic Fighter Squadron, 12th Fighter Wing, Strategic Air Command. He had overseas duty in Japan, Korea and Alaska.

He married Rachel Dunnington of Cherokee, Okla., in 1956 in Yosemite National Park and had four children: Bill, Coby, Frank and Krista. He worked with his father, Harold, in the title and insurance business.

He formed H.H. Bondshu & Son Insurance Agency which later became Bondshu Insurance.

Bob was very active in the community of Mariposa. He served as chair of the Mariposa County Republican Central Committee; served on the State Central Committee for Rural Counties; was a member of the Mariposa Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years, serving 10 years as chief; was Past Commander of the Mariposa VFW Post 6042; a member of the Mariposa Lions Club; Merced-Mariposa Insurance Agents Association; Board of Directors of the Fish and Game; Chairman of the Advisory Council for the Yosemite Deer Herd; served on the Mariposa County Employee Salary Study Committee; Mariposa High School Agricultural Advisory Committee; board member of the John C. Fremont Hospital District for 12 years; Acting Hospital Administrator for four months; and a longtime member of the Matuca Chapter 1849.

Bob loved fishing, hunting deer and quail and was an avid left-handed golfer. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends at May Rock.

Bob is survived by his wife, Rachel Bondshu of Mariposa, Calif.; sister Betty Conlin of Escondido, Calif.; sons Bill ( Jane) Bondshu of Mariposa, Frank Bondshu of Atwater, Calif.; and daughter Krista (Shawn) Stuerman of Buellton, Calif. He has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Mariposa Museum and History Center or the Mariposa VFW Post 8042.

A celebration of life will be conducted on Dec. 11 at noon at the Van Ness Ranch, 5260 Carleton Road Mariposa.
