Lorraine Campbell

Lorraine Barbara Campbell passed away peacefully on Nov. 2, 2016 in Merced, surrounded by her family.

Lorraine was born Feb. 26, 1924 in Sacramento, Calif., where she spent her younger years. She attended Heald’s Business College and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento before enlisting in the Navy W.A.V.E.S. for two years.

During this time in San Diego, Lorraine met her husband, Allen, who was also in the Navy. They met at a USO dance and corresponded by mail for two years while Allen was deployed overseas. When he returned, they married and briefly moved to Bowling Green, Ohio (Allen’s home state) so he could finish college.

In later years, Lorraine did secretarial work in Sacramento and Contra Costa County. She retired as a secretary with Contra Costa Environmental Health Department.

Lorraine enjoyed traveling to many places around the world with both senior groups and with her daughters, including Australia, Fiji, China, Russia, Great Britain and other European countries. She was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed growing beautiful roses of all types, and her garden was always one of the nicest.

Lorraine played piano and sang in her Methodist church choir. She had a love for all types of music, which she also instilled in her daughters, Linda and Laurie. Over the years, Lorraine loved spending holidays in Mariposa with the Carter family.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; her parents, Edith Lundy and Floyd Wilson; and her two brothers, Elmer and Marvin Wilson. She was loving mother to her daughters, Linda Carter (Chuck) of Mariposa and Laurie DeMarche (David) of Santa Rosa.

Lorraine was dearly loved by her family and friends, and she will remain forever in our hearts. A remembrance of Lorraine will be held at a later date.
