Janet Wheeler

Miss Janet Lucile Wheeler was welcomed into this world March 2, 1919 by Florence and Hayes Wheeler, and siblings Willis, Hazel, Louis, Florence and Muriel, in La Verne, Calif.

Janet attended Biola College. Studies were interrupted for a year due to a serious vehicle accident but were resumed in 1941 and Janet went on to graduate.

Miss Wheeler and Miss Ruth Ann Sinclair, a friend from college, moved to Mariposa in the late 1940s, became involved in child evangelism, served at the Whispering Pines Christian Camp in Midpines, and became charter members of First Baptist Church. Ruth Ann purchased a ranch on Triangle Road. This was ‘home’ for 50-plus years.

Miss Wheeler and Miss Sinclair held Good News Bible Clubs around Mariposa County including Yosemite, Greeley Hill, Cathey’s Valley and Mariposa. A large chunk of the ranch was sold to fund the startup of Cedar Grove Camp which was held for decades. Each spring and through camp season, numerous friends helped make the camp a wonderful and memorable experience for numerous children.

Janet loved gardening, flowers, music, animals, lemon meringue pie, a collection of dolls from around the world, a library of hymnals, Christian song books and missionary biographies. Sharing the good news about Jesus’ love was her joy and passion. The ‘wordless book’ explained the gospel. She treasured her bible and adored Jesus.

Miss Wheeler taught Sunday school, Children’s Church, Bible Club and Ladies Bible studies. Her grasp and understanding of the bible was solid. She lived what she taught.

The remainder of the ranch property was sold and the money was used to buy a home in town. After Miss Sinclair’s home going, Miss Wheeler moved to an apartment and then to the Ewing Wing where she was lovingly cared for by staff and friends. She appreciated the church services there, sang the hymns and loved the bible preaching. Her Heavenly Father called her home to Heaven Sept. 2, 2016.

A memorial service was held on Oct. 15 at the First Baptist Church, 5005 Frank Howard Street on 49 North, Mariposa. For more information, call (209) 966-5780.
