Helen Poole

Helen Eileen Allen Poole January 9, 1925 - August 18, 2016

Helen “Poo” Allen Poole, a long-time resident of Mariposa, passed away on Aug. 18, 2016.

Poo was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Missouri Valley, Iowa to William and Irene Jones. She was raised in and graduated from high school in Missouri Valley. After high school, she married John Allen of Missouri Valley.

Poo was an Air Force officer’s wife, which moved the family in several locations around the United States including Reno, Nev.; Atwater, Calif.; Grand Forks, N.D.; Abilene, Texas and retiring in Mariposa, Calif., in January 1970.

Poo was busy raising five children, involving herself in PTA and being a nurse’s aide. The family acquired horses in Texas where she enjoyed barrel racing. In retirement, she was a teacher’s aide at Mariposa Elementary School and continued to see former students around town.

Her favorite activity was starting a local senior citizens band called “The Alley Cats,” which she directed and they played locally as well as in the Merced-Atwater area.

Traveling throughout the world, Poo enjoyed several cruises to Alaska and the eastern and western Caribbean. Her children once gave her a squirrel monkey named Ralph Kong, snakes and even an alligator as pets.

After the death of her husband John, Poo married George Poole of Mariposa. George is all about collecting “treasures” and Poo quickly became a yard sale fanatic stopping at all sales around the country in their travels.

Poo was preceded in death by her parents, sister Shirley “Pete” Larson and daughter Marty Limbaugh.

Poo is survived by her husband George Poole and children Sherry ( Jim) Granger of Phoenix, Ariz.; Bill (Nina) Allen of Los Banos, Calif.; Jack (Lora) Allen of Madera, Calif.; and Jim (Lee Ann) Allen of Mariposa; step-children Gene (Ruth) Poole of Mariposa, John Poole of Gardnerville, Nev., and Eileen Becchio of Fairfield Calif.; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Per her request, there will be no services.
