Claire Goldman

Claire Kathleen Daniels

Goldman died recently at

98 years old. She had lived in Mariposa since 2002.

Claire was born and raised in England, and although she had lived in the USA since 1946, she was British to her core. She never lost her charming accent. Claire was a fashion model in London in the 1930s, and later, during World War II, she served as a commissioned officer in the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).

During the war, she met and married an American serviceman, Joseph Goldman, the love of her life. They were married for 45 years until his death. After the war, she came to America with her baby daughter on the first boatload of GI Brides that arrived on the RMS Queen Mary.

Claire spent the rest of her life in California. Besides being devoted to her family, she had a successful real estate career. But it’s not what Claire was that distinguished her — it’s who she was. She will be remembered as a strong, compassionate and caring woman. She was an example of strength and courage to everyone she ever encountered.

She moved through chapters and tragedies in her life with grace and resilience; she embraced change. Claire had a wry sense of humor and did not tolerate fools gladly, and Claire always had a twinkle in her eye. She adored her family and her friends as they adored her.

She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Angela Heiss (George); her grandchildren, Pamela Ewald (Ken) and Daniel Heiss (Phoenix); her great-grandchildren, Jarrah and Sierra Heiss; and numerous extended family and friends — especially Jose and Francisca Mendez.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests that donations be made to John C. Fremont Hospice at P.O. Box 216, Mariposa, CA 95338. A memorial will be held in the spring of 2017 in Midpines.
