Tony Williams named softball Small School Coach of the Year

CalHiSports honors Williams

Softball coach Tony Williams has turned the Mariposa County High School Grizzlies into a softball dynasty.

He was recognized for that fact by CalHiSports.com. Williams was named Small School Coach of the Year in late June.

A post on CalHiSports.com stated: “Since taking over in 2011, primarily to coach his daughters, Williams has led the Grizzlies to four CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championships in five seasons, including the last three.

This year’s team completed a three-peat with a 9-1 win over Millennium of Tracy in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoffs. Millenium had a record of 26-1 entering that game, but couldn’t stay close. Mariposa finished 24-2-1 and was No. 2 in the final Division V state rankings. Williams’ team also was No. 2 in the 2015 final D5 state rankings.

Named by the Southern League as its Coach of the Year, Williams has a record of 105-28-1 over five seasons with the Grizzlies and is 49-6-1 over the last two years.

The title team from two years ago was led by Williams’ daughter, Shea. Another daughter, Riyn, was one of the top players in 2012. Williams’ son, Jake, was the leading player on this year’s baseball team at Mariposa, which also won the D6 section championship.”

Bobby Flores of Grand Terrace was named Medium Schools Coach of the Year and Judy Shaubach was named overall State Coach of the Year.

The last State Small Schools Coaches of the Year were: 2016 – Tony Williams (Mariposa County, Mariposa); 2015 – Margaret Neill (Lancaster Paraclete); 2014 – Russell Emberson (Taft); 2013 – Melissa Bugarin-Espinoza (San Pedro Port of Los Angeles); 2012 – Jim Pingree (Monterey Santa Catalina); 2011 – Mike Pontius (Lodi Elliot Christian); 2010 – Raoul Singh (Sutter); 2009 – Alan Borges (Eureka St. Bernard’s); 2008 – Art Lilly (Riverside Christian); 2007 – Casey Cooper (Newman Orestimba); 2006 – Alex Blanco (Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart).
