Menetrey has commanding lead in District 5 race; Jones leads in District 2

Miles Menetrey took a commanding lead Tuesday night as the first returns came in for the election for District 5 supervisor in Mariposa County.

As of about 9 p.m., Tuesday, Menetrey had tallied 510 votes compared to 383 for incumbent John Carrier, the current chairman of the board of supervisors.

In District 2, where three people are contending for the seat, incumbent Merlin Jones had tallied 378 votes compared to 244 for Debbie Cook and 32 for Thane Suderman.

The votes were counted from the absentee ballots received at the office of Mariposa County Clerk Keith Williams.

Williams said about half of the absentee ballots sent out were received and counted.

The vote by mail turnout was just over 35 percent, according to the voter summary report issued by Williams on Tuesday night.

The votes are preliminary until the voting-day ballots are counted, which was expected later on Tuesday night.
