Melissa Carter

On Tuesday, April 5 the world lost a beautiful person and a child of

Yosemite.

Melissa Anne (Missy) Carter lost her life in a car accident. She was born in her beloved Yosemite Valley on Nov. 19, 1968 and raised in El Portal just a few miles away.

She graduated from Mariposa

County High School as salutatorian in 1986, and attended UC Santa Barbara where she graduated with honors in 1990.

She had a long career with the National Park Service for over two decades, working at Cape Cod National Seashore for a few years before returning home to Yosemite. She recently changed career paths and began working for Tavis Corporation in Mariposa.

She is survived by her loving parents, Hugh and Lou Carter of Midpines, Calif., her older brother Matt and his wife Kristen and their children Dylan and Elena of Seattle, Wash., her younger brother Chuck and his wife Mimi and their children Canyon and Evelyn of El Portal, Calif., as well as countless friends and extended family members across the country and world.

We all love you very much and we’ll always miss you. Services will be Saturday, April 16 at the El Portal Community Hall at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Yosemite Scholarship Commission, P.O. Box 313 El Portal, CA 95318.
