Jack Leroy Coats, Jr.

Jack Leroy Coats, Jr. passed away suddenly at his home on March 16,

Born to Jack Sr. and Helen Coats on June 23, 1954 in Yosemite, Jack was educated in Mariposa up to his junior year of high school. For his senior and graduating term, he attended Sherman Indian High School in Riverside.

He went on to major in law enforcement at College of the Redwoods. There he met his wife Joni (Bunny). They made their home in Midpines until her tragic passing at a very young age.

Jack worked for the National Park Service for several years, then turned to the roads of America to make his living as a long-haul driver. This was to be his livelihood throughout his working life.

Early in those years, he met and married Sharon Buchannan. They divorced after 10 years. He then had a rather extended period of bachelorhood until he married Rhonda Nelson on October 31, 2005. They made their home on Colorado Road in Midpines.

Throughout his adult life, Jack mentored many Mariposa children in the sport of soccer, acting as coach or referee. His love of motorcycles was uppermost but he also had an active interest in model trains, fishing and aquariums. He took great pride in his Native American heritage and loved family gatherings.

Jack is survived by his wife Rhonda; parents, Jack Sr. and Helen Coats; children, Shawna, Waylon and Paydon Coats, Jessie Mayes and Justin Perdew, all of Mariposa and Sonora.

He also leaves behind nine beloved grandchildren; sisters, Veta Foster, Lisa and Pamela Coats, also of Mariposa. Many extended family members and friends of this community will also bear the grief and feel the loss at his passing.

There will be a celebration of Jack’s life on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Midpines fire station and community center.
