The California Highway Patrol said both people who died were from Mariposa County.

Melissa Anne Carter, 47, from El Portal and Tony Lane Record, 56, Midpines, were both killed in the accident.

A third victim, Tim Todd Hartley, 47, Midpines, was transported by Mercy Ambulance and Mercy Air to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto with a fractured hip.

According to the CHP, Carter was driving her 2011 Honda CRV east on Highway 140, about 1.5 miles east of the Briceburg Bridge.

Record was driving his 1996 Dodge Caravan west on the highway at around 1:05 p.m.

The CHP report states Carter crossed over the solid double yellow lines and struck the other vehicle head-on.

Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. Record died while being transported from the scene by Mercy Ambulance.

Hartley, who was riding in the vehicle being driven by Record, was taken by ground and air ambulance to the hospital in Modesto.

The accident happened on a blind curve. Both lanes of traffic were closed until after 5 p.m. Many local emergency response agencies were on the scene.

The California Highway Patrol encourages everyone to be aware of blind curves on the many mountain roads in this area.
