Robert (Bob) Dell Metzler

Robert (Bob) Dell Metzler, a longtime resident of El Portal, passed away Oct. 7, 2015 at the Fresno Veterans Comfort Living Center. He was 93.

Bob came to his Ned’s Gulch mining claim on the Merced river after returning home from Germany, where he was a tank commander in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a driller and powder man and worked on many road and bridge building jobs in Mariposa County, including the William Sell Bridge, the Bagby Bridge and the Tioga Pass Road, as well as pursuing his mining dreams at his mining claim at Ned's Gulch.

He was born in Greensburg, Penn. He is survived by his son, William Ward; granddaughter, Kylie Metzler; and four grandsons, Jesiah Ward, Haakan Ward, Caleb Ward and Zachary Ward.

Bob was known for always telling people about the Lord.

There will be a memorial service Nov. 21, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Grace Community Church, 3367 Woodland Drive in Mariposa.

Bob's famous saying when he would say goodbye was, “Tap her light and keep your powder dry.” But he also wanted everyone to know that he “tried, cried, sighed and died.”
