Clarisa Maria Garza

Clarisa Maria Garza, a long-time resident of Yosemite National Park and Oakhurst, passed away peacefully in her home in Chico on Sept. 7, 2015. She was 86.

She was the loving wife of a threewar, Purple Heart veteran and called Yosemite Valley home for 19 years. She rests in Heaven with her husband, Alfonso, of 66 years.

They are survived by their seven children, Alfonso Jr., Teresa, Tomas, Lainey, Luisa, Andy and Patty, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Clarisa was born Feb. 17, 1929 in Brownsville, Texas.

Her most charmed and special memories of the prime of her life were the Yosemite days of enchantment. She often reminisced about tubing or rafting on the Merced River, camping at Tenaya Lake, hiking with the women’s group in the high Sierra, rummage sales, big parties at friends’ houses, Halloween costume parties, ski and snow days, bears on the porch, daily walks with her girlfriends and special church events, just to mention a few of the special things that filled her life, and ours, in Yosemite.

Clarisa was in the PTA, a Spanish interpreter for the courts, taught junior college-level Spanish, worked at the Yosemite Visitors’ Center and the post office, as well as a Yosemite south gate entrance ranger.

She was a darn good cook who kept our traditions alive with humor and grace. She taught us about love in a gentle way and she taught us about the challenges and changes in life as we grow into being the wise elders.

There will be a celebration of Clarisa’s life at the Cedar Lodge conference room in El Portal on Nov. 7. The family invites everyone who loved our Mother to RSVP and get more information by Oct. 28, using the email address of family_ garza@yahoo.com or by visiting the Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/familygarza.
