Sheriff's deputy shot after pursuit on Highway 49 S.

A Mariposa County Sheriff's deputy was shot twice by a suspect after initiating a traffic stop on a vehicle due to erratic driving around 6 a.m. Thursday. The pursuit began on Hwy 49 South just south of Mariposa.

The suspect, Brian Ballasch, a white male adult from the Merced area, crashed his vehicle into assisting sheriff units; he then exited his vehicle and after a short verbal exchange started shooting at deputies.  

One deputy was struck twice, in the face and in the torso.  The suspect was struck by deputy fire.  The deputy was flown to a north valley hospital.  

The suspect is in custody for attempted murder of a peace officer and is being treated locally. The suspect's gun is believed to be a .45 caliber pistol.

More information will be released as details become available, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office reported.
