Deputy who was shot remains in critical condition

The yet unnamed Mariposa County Sheriff's Office deputy wounded in an exchange of gun fire following a traffic stop early Thursday morning on Highway 49 South remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit of Memorial Hospital in Modesto this morning, according to Public Information Officer Kristie Mitchell.

The deputy was allegedly shot twice by Brian Ballasch, (pictured) who also sustained gun shot wounds. Ballasch, a Marine who did three tours of duty in Iraq and reportedly suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), was treated in Mariposa and transferred to an out-of-county hospital.
