Deputy Mirelez still in critical condition, improving

The Mariposa County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot Thursday, Oct. 1, is still in critical condition in a Modesto hospital intensive care unit, but is improving daily. Deputy Rudy Mirelez, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, was allegedly shot by Merced resident Brian Ballasch after a pursuit that ended on Highway 49 South, near the fairgrounds. A Gofundme.comaccount has been set up for the Mirelez family, and the Mariposa Deputy Sheriff's Association has established an account at Westamerica Bank for the family. Donations can be made to account number 0168484285. And on Friday, Oct. 23, Jason Dubberke will donate 10 percent of the entire day's sales at Pioneer Market to the family. For the complete story, see the Oct. 8 issue of the Gazette.
