Children may have been exposed to whooping cough

Children at Sierra Foothill Charter School and Cathey’s Valley Preschool may have been exposed to whooping cough, according to Mariposa County Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Ryder.

A Merced child whose siblings attend those two schools was recently diagnosed with the highly-infectious disease. If a child has cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and coughing, Ryder said the child should be taken to a doctor and parents should tell the doctor the child may have been exposed to whooping cough.

Ryder added that the risk of a child coming down with the disease is low, but not zero.
