Man dies after hanging himself at Mariposa County Jail

Armando VargasArmando VargasArmando Vargas, 48, an inmate at the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office Adult Detention Facility, hanged himself Sept. 15 in a secured jail cell. He was found unconscious and not breathing and officers immediately summoned emergency medical response and started CPR, according to a sheriff's office press release. Vargas was flown by helicopter to a Central Valley hospital where he continued to receive medical help. On Sept. 20, Vargas died as a result of the hanging. He had been in custody at the jail since Feb. 1, when he was arrested for alleged felony violations, including domestic violence and assaulting a peace officer. When asked about how Vargas hanged himself, the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office said it wasn't releasing any more information.
