Agencies issue foul air warnings

Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015 - 12:14 p.m. - The smoky skies in the county have  prompted the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District and the Mariposa County Air Pollution Control District to issue an air quality alert for smoke that is associated with the Rough Fire, which is burning in eastern Fresno County.

The air is rated as poor, which can cause serious health problems due to exposure to particle pollution. The smoke can aggravate lung disease, cause asthma attacks and acute bronchitis and increase the risk of respiratory infections.

Residents are advised to use caution and people with heart or lung diseases should follow their doctor’s advice for dealing with episodes of unhealthy air quality.

Older adults and children should avoid prolonged exposure to the smoky air, and should not participate in strenous activities or heavy exertion.

The air quality alert has also been issued for Fresno, Madera, Kings and Tulare counties.
