Raymond Solano

Raymond Solano, 89, passed away in his sleep at his home in Mariposa in the predawn hours of Thursday, June 16, 2015. He would have been 90 in August.

Raymond was born in San Gabriel on Aug. 31, 1925. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1963 after 22 years of service. He graduated from Long Beach State with a bachelor of arts in industrial arts, and eventually obtained two masters degrees from Claremont College in vocational education and administration. He did all this while raising six children.

He was a dedicated cyclist and started a bike club in Cypress where he was a college counselor before retiring. He and his wife, Judith, moved to Mariposa in 1990. He started another bike club, Will Risk It, and was on a bike ride in 2010 when he suffered a double heart attack. He finished the ride before driving himself to the doctor. His family estimates that he rode the mileage equivalent of twice around the equator during his cycling career.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Judith Solano, and six children: Tatyana, Anthony, Judith Anne, Susanna, Francesca and Gregory. He also has 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren who all thought he was better than ice cream.

As per his request, there will not be any funeral or memorial services. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes spread without witness.
