(Roseanna Robles | CONTRIBUTED)Tuesday, June 16, 2015 - 9:15 a.m. - Area CAL FIRE officials this week issued stricter fire rules that limit campfires and outdoor smoking.

“Due to the extreme menace of life by fire,” Nancy Koerperich, state fire chief for the area, issued the order this week. It applies to all of Mariposa, Madera and Merced counties until significant rainfall alters fire risk.

While the order curtails campfires and outdoor smoking, both are allowed in designated campgrounds. Smoking is permitted inside motor vehicles or in an area at least three feet in diameter that is cleared of brush and flammable material.
