Obituary

Merle Elsie (Ehlers) Judkins of Mystic, Conn., who previously lived in Midpines, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn. She was 92.

Merle was born on August 6, 1922, in Richmond, and was the daughter of the late Henry and Nellie (Beck) Ehlers.

Merle was married to the late Francis Elliott Judkins in Richmond on May 25, 1945. Francis passed away in John C. Fremont Hospital in Mariposa on Dec. 10, 1984 and is buried in the Mariposa town cemetery.

Merle worked at Beckman Instruments in Richmond as a bookkeeper from 1951 to 1972.

One of her favorite holidays was Christmas and she would bake plum pudding with rum sauce, which was a recipe of Alice (Weston) Judkins, her mother-in-law.

Merle loved camping with her family, traveling through many states, and was known to have even baked a cake on a few of those camping trips. They also traveled frequently to the family cabin in Midpines.

In 1974, both she and her husband, Francis, moved to the family property in Midpines which had been in the Judkins family since 1910. They lived in a small trailer while they built their new home. The little trailer served them well, including spending winters in Slab City.

They enjoyed many years of square dancing and were in several clubs through the years, including the Bootjack Stompers and they attended several square dance conventions.

Merle moved to Connecticut in 1990 to be closer to her two daughters.

Her favorite pastime was going out to eat with family and friends. Many Sunday afternoons were spent playing Liverpool rummy with her children and grandchildren.

Merle is fondly remembered for her great sense of humor and she enjoyed being the recipient of a good joke as much as teasing others. She was well known for her exceptional sewing skills, alterations and tailoring. Besides clothing, she made dolls and created lavish wardrobes for them.

She was a member of the Tree of Life Christian Church in New London, Conn.

Her survivors include four children; Francine Sullivan of Mystic, Conn., John L. Judkins, and his wife Margaret of San Pablo; Aron Judkins and his wife Valerie of Antioch; and Julie Church and her husband, Everett of Groton, Conn.; and two step sons, Ronald Judkins, and his wife Patty of Guttenburg, Iowa and Clifford Judkins, and his wife Joann of Midpines; 10 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Timothy J. Sullivan, and a brother, William H. Ehlers.

Memorial services were held on April 12, 2015 at Tree of Life Christian Church in New London, Conn.

Her burial will be private at the Mariposa County Cemetery.
