William “Bill” R. Whitla, a resident of Hornitos, passed away in Modesto on April 7.

William was born in New Brighton, Pa., where he lived for over 18 years. He relocated to California some years later. William held various occupations over the years such as AAA baseball, Ari Plane flight controller in Los Angeles, Palmdale, El Toro and Fresno; ran three liquor stores; ran the La Palma Shopping Center, covering more than 10 stores; ran a hog ranch in Norco; was a flight instructor and charter pilot for Mazzies Flight Service in Fresno and was the owner of Bill’s Hitching Post Restaurant and Saloon in Ahwahnee.

William was preceded in death by his former wife, Barbara Whitla, his mother Evelyn Whitla and his son William R. Whitla Jr.. He is survived by his wife Janet Whitla of Hornitos, his son Billy Whitla and grandson Chaz Whitla, daughter Brenda and Clyde Pinto and granddaughter Carmen of Redwood City, his stepchildren Abel (Kristyn) Lopez and children, Jeff (Amen- Marie Fuller Hernandez) and children of Santa Clarita and his cousin Gretchen Guy Ott and family of Monaca, Pa.

A viewing will be held on Thursday April 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, 1490 B Street in Merced.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, April 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 4985 Bullion Street in Mariposa. A graveside service to follow at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Habitat for Humanity or the charity of the donor’s choice.
