(Erik Skindrud | The GAZETTE)Wednesday, April 22, 2015 - 1:15 p.m. - A group of workers took time out to scour the Mariposa Creek area for trash today. It was one of the county's few Earth Day observances.

The Mariposa-based Yosemite National Park employees grabbed loose plastic, cigarette butts and other debris from the creek area. Other Earth Day events took place last Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18 in the Park.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970. It was founded by the Christian peace activist and environmentalist John McConnell, who passed away in 2012.
