Obituary

Joseph Howard Ewing, a retired math and science teacher and preacher, died on March 18, 2015 due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was 91.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ewing, to whom he was married for 67 years.

The couple had six children— Joe, Shirley, Dan, Jim, Marilyn and Bob (deceased). He is survived by two grandchildren, Dawn and Ricky; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlin, Carly, Logan, Nathan and Travis. He is also survived by one brother, Robert Ewing and his wife Joan and two nephews.

Ewing was born in Toronto, Canada to Joseph and Marjorie Ewing. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He completed his college education at Harding College in Searcy, Ark. and then did graduate work at Pepperdine College in Los Angeles.

After retiring from a 35- year teaching career in Southern California, he continued to substitute teach with Mariposa County School District for 17 years.

Howard was a member of the Church of Christ. He first preached when he was a student at Harding College in 1946 and preached regularly for 45 years. He began the church work in Moorpark and at the San Fernando Christian School.

Howard accompanied a missionary group to Nigeria in 1980 and preached through an interpreter. He has worked extensively in Christian camps as director, teacher and counselor.

His interests included the church, Bible studies, home and family, travel, sports, sharing food and helping others, participating 50 years with the Yosemite Bible encampments, living and working on a ranch where he felt so blessed to live.

The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the Ewing Wing at John C. Fremont Hospital for their support in his final days.
